RC workday March 2012

RC Workday a success!

With great effort and enthusiasm, members of the Lake Powell RC Modelers made great improvement to the Olson Airfield on Saturday, March 24. Bob and Ryta Hartzell provided brats, burgers, and hot dogs from the grill of Chef Robert. Other members contributed chips, salad, fruit, buns, condiments, and soft drinks. Jim Kitson and Gene Tucker provided the large equipment and tools to remake field edge and fencing. Judy Kitson and Becky Miller put their artistic touch on repainting the tables. Tom Zwack improved the condition of the Cry Room. Joe McPhail was in charge of torching the weeds accumulated by several members. Thanks to Joe for the Burn Permit. Jon Ridpath reinforced the smaller shade structure. Art Cloutier and Bob King stopped by to visit and we encouraged them to rejoin the club. It is always amazing to me how much a small group can accomplish when working together. Good job!

Pam

Pam Brown

In attendance: Pam Brown, Tom Zwack, George Watson (officer), Jim & Judy (officer) Kitson, Rita & Bob Hartzell, Joe McPhail, Gene Tucker and Jon Ridpath, and visitors, Mike & Becky Miller.

While Gene Tucker and Jon Ridpath did not arrive at the meeting until after the elections were over we had a quorum of officers and members in attendance, (2 officers and 1/5th of the members) during the meeting.

Treasurer's report - CD at $2583.41 due to roll over 4/26/2012 and approx. $2000 in checking. Reminder to everyone to get their AMA paid as it runs Jan - Jan. (see attached listing as of Jan. of AMA's listing of our club members and their expiration dates.)

AMA Charter coming up which will require a $90 payment and a listing of officers. It was therefore decided that since this was due and since we had a quorum, it was a good time to elect new officers so the report could be turned in complete.

The floor was open for election of Treasurer. George Watson said he would accept for another year, but is in the transition of moving to Verde Valley. Tom Zwack said he would be interested to begin learning what is involved to step into the position should things change for George. The motion was made to accept George as current treasurer and Tom as stand-in to fill George's position should George decide to resign. It was seconded and approved unanimously.

The motion was made for Joe McPhail to be Vice President. Joe agreed to run, there was a second and he was voted in unanimously.

Pam Brown said she would be willing to run for President if Judy Kitson would continue to handle the newsletter and other publicity/correspondence. Judy indicated she would. There was a motion and second, and they were voted in unanimously.

There was then a motion for Bob Hartzell to be Safety officer. He accepted, it was moved and seconded and voted in unanimously.

I've attached a copy of our club by-laws.

Judy Kitson reported on a brochure that is being created to be put up in Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce. It was voted to include the proposed directory as part of the brochure, so anyone looking at the brochure would be able to find a member who might help them get interested in the club.

Pam reported that at the next meeting she would have an overview of the Master Plan to maintain the club.

Pam and Tom have been approaching the city of Page to see if there are ways we can have support in updating our field - more on that at the next meeting.

Pam will get in touch with those over the Air event at the Airport to see how we can be involved at the next event this year.

We will also be looking at ideas for fund raisers, (maybe a raffle) and activities by the club (maybe a swap meet). Bring your ideas to the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned.

Letter from outgoing President - Judy Kitson

I want to thank you all for your support during the past few years. Over the 14 years that I have been a member, about 12 of those have been as officer, I have seen big changes in our membership. When I came into the club we were about 15 members. During the past few years that dropped considerably due to people moving, dying or taking on other interests. Also at the time I joined we were involved yearly in the Air Affair, both as their starting attraction and a static display. When the city lost the Air Affair, we began to see the largest drop in our club interest.

Meetings and activities were sparse and poorly attended.

During my time as President, we basically maintained the field for flying, but did little toward club growth in activities, etc. About 4 years ago we had a new boost in our membership Pam Brown, Tom Zwack and Bob Hartzell, and now those newcomers, have the experience under their belt, both to fly and to lead. Joe McPhail (our youngest member, is both an old-timer, who moved away, and a newcomer, who has moved back. They also have the most enthusiasm to work to make something happen. Those of us old-timers, George Watson, Gene Tucker, Jon Ridpath, Jim & Judy Kitson, are ready to support them as they lead with some new ideas.

For the past few years we have been in a holding pattern. Now with these new officers we can fly.

Judy Kitson

Minutes of January 10, 2012 Meeting

Members in Attendance: Pam Brown, Tom Zwack, Bob Hartzell, Joe McPhail, Jon Ridpath

Meeting Held at Pam Brown’s house at 585 Pinto Road, Page, AZ at 6:00 PM

1. Treasurer Report: None

2. AMA Business: None

3. Activities: Jim’s grading of a berm on the east end of the south side of the runway looks great and should address the drainage concerns that are affecting the runway surface in that area. Jim’s grading skills have also wiped away a lot of the weeds on the far side of the runway. Many thanks to Jim for his expert use of his trusty grader. The gate needs repaired where the welds have broken. Joe and Tom Z. will get together to make repairs on the gate. Jim has the new orange safety fence at his house on a trailer. All fencing needs to be replaced. A clean up day at the field will be scheduled for the last part of March as weather permits to replace fence, address weeds, etc. A big thank you to Jim and Judy Kitson for hosting meetings at their home for several years. Judy has also done an outstanding job of keeping the website going. Everyone needs to help her out by providing photos and information that can go on the website.

4. Master Plan for Airfield:

A. Tom Zwack gave a report on meetings with the mayor on improvements to the airfield. Mayor will ask City Engineer to look at the site. If City will cover junk at west end of runway with sand, we can put runway material on top of it to hold it, thus keeping junk covered and lengthening runway.

B. Concrete is needed to replace black belting between ramada and runway.

C. Replace orange fencing and make wider openings to runway. Move black belting under fencing to keep weeds down.

D. Reinforce small shade because it is shaky.

E. Ask Western Rock and ADOT about road fines for runway.

F. Tom Z. and Bob will measure field and make sketch for basis of Master Plan.

5. Recruiting New Members: Signs about the club and meetings will be produced for members to post. Email meeting reminders and minutes to those who might be interested including former members. More activity at the field invites everyone. Photos from field should be in email and on website. Produce an informational brochure to give to potential members.

6. Making a Member Directory: Pam will ask Judy for member info necessary to produce a directory so that members can contact each other more easily.

7. Show and Tell: Jon showed us his electric Cub and modifications to the engine mount to account for thrust. Pam showed her smaller electric Cub that Jim has helped her get together.

Next meeting Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 6:00 PM Bring your sweetheart with you to the meeting!
